Chinese coins
found with a metal detector on
old campsites in historic gold mining areas of Nth Queensland.
Coins are slightly different from each other in size and in
character. These variations reflect the different mint origins
and regional locations. The coins are bronze cast and can vary
in composition and purity. Some examples have shown a high
ferrous content (attracted by a magnet)
Dynasty
The majority
of coins are from the Ching Dynasty.
Coin Condition
The condition of coins found are
usually corroded, broken, pitted and bent. Examples shown
here are the best available after undergoing light cleaning
with a toothbrush and some olive oil. The colouring shows
typical patina of coins that have been buried for over 100
years.
Digital photography has allowed the enhancement and
sharpening of identifying features. Relative sizes and
colours do not
always appear correctly.
