The Legendary Welcome Stranger - Australia
welcome stranger nugget

The largest gold nugget ever, was found by Dick Deason on the 5th of February 1886.
It was in the days of the great gold rushes of Victoria at Moliagul that this monster piece of gold was uncovered.
Its weight was 2315 Ounces and assayed at 98.6 percent pure gold. The Welcome stranger was broken up and sold for 9534 pounds.
At to-days value that would be over 2 million dollars just for the metal. As a collectors piece it would have been worth a fortune. A sketch was made of it and many plaster replicas were made of it.

144 Ounces of Unique History

Gold Nuggett

4.59 kg specimen found in Nth Qld

Found in Nth Queensland Australia, on the Etheridge Gold Fields in the Georgetown region.

Found with a Minelab GP Extreme and the stock standard 18" black DD coil at 1 meter deep.

Nuggets over 100 Ounces are extremely rare for Queensland. While pieces over 100 ounces have been quite common for Victoria and Western Australia, for Queensland this nugget is considered very large.

This unique collectors piece has been sold.

Nice to see that someone new to detecting can still find such a good lump of gold.

At 5.7 Ounces it is great to see that not all the gold is gone.
