Make Metal Detector Selection more simple. With so many makers offering a bewildering array of fine models it can be difficult to make the right choice. One thing for sure, metal detectors are cheaper and more potent than ever before. Today's entry level and mid range price level metal detector is better made, lighter, more economical to operate and detects metal objects deeper with far greater reliability.

Psychology of hunters

Metal detectors and detecting has been compared to fishing, fishing rods and boats. A lot of passion and love of the activity is involved. A little philosophy goes a long way in understanding why we do these crazy pastimes. Is it the possibility of finding something of great value? Is it another pleasant way to fill in our spare time? Is it the great friendships and camaraderie around the camp fire? What ever the reason don't take it too seriously, don't try to turn it into a job as there are lots of easier jobs in the world, don't lose  friends over it. Treat it as a hobby that can pay if you put enough time into it. If you enjoy being out in the great outdoors, anything you find is a bonus. A carefree attitude with your mind and body in tune with your surroundings is most important. Let the universal force guide you. Let the detector be an extension of your thoughts. Be as comfortable as possible and banish anger.

Which make, which model

There is no one metal detector that does all jobs equally well. I you are starting out you will have to make some compromises and concentrate on the main job you wish to accomplish. What do you want the metal detector for. The question is do you wish to specialise in one particular area of detecting like gold nugget hunting or detecting beaches or maybe even diving in deep waters? Do you want a metal detector for multi purpose use?

Types of detectors for:

  • Gold nuggets

  • Coin and relics

  • Beach and water

In Australia the hobby market is dominated by detectors for gold nugget hunting because historically we have had an abundance of gold. As surface gold gets harder to be found, more people are turning to other forms of metal detecting. Beach combing, under water or shallow water metal detecting, parks and old townships are just a few of other detecting methods available.
