ANGOR
TO ZILLMANTON Paperback 462 pages
by Colin Hooper
Stories of North Queensland deserted towns
This is a wonderful
written book about the early settlement history of North Queensland.
There are great stories of places and characters that populated
the early day landscape. The hardships of mining and exploration
endured, are still visible today in the remains of ghost towns.
This book is full of useful historical information including
copies of early town survey maps. It shows how important tin
and gold mining was to the eventual establishment of our larger
coastal townships. It could be said that that we owe our existence
to these early day pioneers. Read more at

THE SMALL MINER AND NATIVE
TITLE
Paperback 408 pages
by Ralph de Lacy
The grant of almost all mining tenure Australia wide was 'frozen'
on 23rd December 1996 after the Wik High Court decision and
remains 'frozen' to this day. This Government action completely
caught out the traditional small miners. This is the story of
one of those small miners. What started out as an attempt to
get his application for mining lease granted by the Queensland
State Government, turned into an attempt to get all small mining
tenure granted by developing a number of Indigenous Land Use
Agreements that covered all Aboriginal concerns and all types
of Mining Tenure within the vast North Queensland Land council
Aboriginal Corporation area. This attempt over a five and a
half year period was constantly thwarted by the continuous manipulations
of a number of key players, and an unworkable Act of Parliament.
REVIEWS
An excellent read. I couldn't put it down. Ralph's table
cloth analogy is the best description of NT I have ever read.
It is unbelievable how closely the battle in NQ is mirrored
by APLA's in WA." - Bill O'Donnell, Vice President/Native
Title Facilitator, Amalgamated Prospectors and Leaseholders
Association of Western Australia
"A story
of betrayal, extortion, hypocrisy and apathy, but also of persistence,
goodwill and faith and common sense." Ian Frazer, 'Townsville
Bulletin'
'This is
a fascinating account of a period of Australia's history which
many of us have filed into the history files - unaware that
this 1993 Act still has huge repercussions today.' - Wendy
O'Hanlon, Australian Provincial Newspapers
