Brass Buttons by George Mayer
While metal detecting around the old gold fields one of the common items found on a regular basis is the old humble metal button. Mostly made of brass, it shows up well on the detector, sometimes mid-range on disc. To me they are welcome friends as they indicate human occupation, indicators of possible more lost items from the gold rush era.

Occasionally you will find a very special button, such as an early police force button or a govt official button. Many regional merchants and taylors had their own brand of buttons.
There are many button varieties, sizes and categories, making a wonderful opportunity for collecting. Armed forces, and railway buttons are specially interesting with its many types and history. Next time you detect a button, don't throw it away. Buttons go well with buckles and medals. Start a collection.
